Clay County boat fire leaves charred debris, boats underwater

Two men are being treated for second-degree burns in Gainesville after an explosion at a Green Cove Springs marina on Saturday.

Police said the men were working on the boat when it caught fire, and the flames quickly spread to surrounding boats.

Ryan Campbell said he was on his boat nearby when he heard an odd click.

“And then whoosh, just like whoosh," he said.

Campbell said he jumped into action after he saw flames engulf the boat.

He said he jumped on board to make sure both men made it off and then tried to extinguish the fire.

“Then it caught the gas on fire and that’s when the first explosion happened," he said. "It blew the glass out."

Looking at the charred damage and debris, Campbell told Action News Jax he feels fortunate.

Four boats are underwater but Campbell was able to remove his with the help of his neighbors.

After the close call, Campbell and other members of the boat community are hoping their friends make a quick recovery.
