The Coast Guard rescued two fishermen trapped on a jetty in Mayport on Monday night.
Only Action News Jax spoke with the two servicemen mane the rescue. The men are safe with their families and asking for privacy.
The Coast Guard said the 73-foot-long shrimp boat was half-full of water by the time their crew got to the scene on the north jetties.
Action News Jax learned the boat’s anchor detached and the current pushed the boat into the jetty.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt during the rescue.
“The best thing to do was put our boat along their boat and to get them to come off,” BM2 Stephen Bamberski said. “We knew at that point the boat was sinking and there was nothing more we can do besides get them off and to safety.”
“Adrenaline was definitely pumping, but your training kicks in and we were trained to that job,” BM2 Thomas Carroll said.
The Coast Guard is working to retrieve the boat.
