Jacksonville to enter new year with over 100 unsolved murder cases

Jacksonville is headed into the new year with more than 160 unsolved homicides and murder cases, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

There were 226 murder and homicide cases in 2016, and only 59 of them have been resolved.

The start of a new year can be tough for people who have lost a loved one.

Ryan Backmann knows that dreadful feeling all too well. His father was murdered in 2009 and his case remains unsolved.

Backmann started Project Cold Case, a site that tracks cold cases, works to solve them and offers hope for families that are waiting for an arrest.

Backman says the new year brings a mix of emotions, but mostly he hopes it will bring justice.

“Hope 2017 will be the year. Frustration that 2016 wasn’t,” said Backmann.
