Crews contain out-of-control prescribed burn in Columbia County

Firefighters contained a prescribed burn that grew into a 290-acre wildfire in Columbia County on Monday.

Florida Forest Firefighters said the wildfire near U.S. 441 and Cone Bridge Road was contained but not under control as of Monday night.

The fire started Monday afternoon and at one point grew to almost 300 acres.

Multiple agencies battled the blaze with more than 8 tractors. They were used to build the fire line and contain the wildfire to 250 acres.

Action News Jax joined rescue crews and got an up-close look at the fire line and the damage.

"The vegetation on top begins to dry out and so the fire burns across pretty quick," said Glenn Davis, a Florida Forest Service operations administrator. "We didn’t see any outrageous fire behavior, it was mostly wind driven."

The fire destroyed a hunting camp site.

Action News Jax was told three generators and a motor home were burned. More than $20,000 worth of damage was reported.

A worker with the camp site said firefighters saved the main building and the site will reopen for hunting season.

The worker also said the site was empty during the fire and no one was hurt. But the fire left its mark as crews still work to put out the fires and hotspots inside the fire line.

Officials said fire crews would work throughout the night Monday and into Tuesday to get the fire completely under control.
