Family of other Jacksonville murder victims lend support to family of man killed at gas station

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A father of five was gunned down at a gas station on the Westside on Sunday.

On Wednesday, Troy Colton's family came together to say goodbye and demand answers at a vigil at that same gas station.

The gunman is still on the run. That’s why the group called MAD DADS helped put on this vigil. They’re urging witnesses to step forward and call police so an arrest can be made.

It started with a prayer circle, and ended with the family and friends of Colton laying candles and pictures in front of a gas station air pump.

A gunman shot and killed the father of five at that exact spot with Colton’s two year old in the car.

“He loved his kids, he’d give before he take,” said James Weaver, Colton’s brother.

Weaver and dozens of others paid their respects at Sunoco on the corner of Rayford Street and McDuff Avenue South.

“I feel like he had a lot of love in the streets. Whoever took him took him out of hatred,” Weaver said.

“Too many families are going through this,” said AJ Jordan, vice president of MAD DADS Jacksonville.

He said this is the sixth murder vigil just this year his group has hosted to encourage witnesses to speak up.

“We need to the community come forward with the information they have, we can’t keep the criminal in the streets doing destruction to our city,” Jordan said.

Colton’s five kids and other loved ones weren’t alone at the vigil. Family of other murder victims stood at their side.

Lori Gilkinson's brother, Stuart Carson, was murdered last year.

“I know how hard it is for the family just knowing the community is out there and does care for them,” Gilkinson said.

Susan Singer said another murder victim, Amber Bass, was like a daughter.

“Enough is enough, just when I walked into the parking lot, it all comes back to me like it was the first day,” Singer said.

Anyone who has any information in Colton’s killing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
