Fearless cat climbs to new heights to avoid Atlantic Beach residents

Residents in Atlantic Beach went to new heights Monday to try to rescue a cat they say has been stuck in a tree for almost a week.

“I don't know if he's on a little kitty vacation at this point but he's not showing much fear at this time,” said Danny Simmons.

Simmons said a few days ago he heard the cat’s cries, looked up and saw him sitting on a branch high in the tree.

Simmons said first he called animal control.

"They (said they) didn't send people to get cats out of trees," said Simmons.

The city said the same thing and offered him a cat trap, but Simmons said neighbors had already tried that.

Then Simmons thought social media might help, so posted on Facebook.

The next thing he knew, people were coming to climb the tree to try to save the cat.

“It's skittish and snarly and one neighbor said he managed to lay a hand on him but it bit his jacket,” said Simmons.

Action News Jax called local firefighters to see if they could help, but they said the tree is hollow in some parts and they said it wouldn’t be safe to send a firefighter up.

That didn’t stop anther resident from giving it another try.

After several risky attempts, the cat went too high to reach and now neighbors are once again hoping the fearless cat will eventually climb down on his own.
