FEMA workshop helps St. Johns County homeowners with Hurricane Matthew recovery

Monday night was the first FEMA workshop in Northeast Florida.

Dozens gathered and quickly broke off into three separate groups to address specific needs.

“They’re cutting out the drywall in their homes, they’ve already taken out the carpet and now they’re trying to take the next steps. What do I do next?” said FEMA representative Deanna Frazier.

More than a month after Hurricane Matthew hit, the next step for many will be to register with FEMA for individual assistance.

For many homeowners, their properties are still unlivable. So far, 35,000 Floridians have registered for individual assistance and FEMA said housing remains the biggest problem.

December 16 is the last day to register for assistance. For information on registering visit DisasterAssistance.gov or call 800-621-FEMA.
