Florence evacuees get warm welcome in Florida

A Jacksonville business owner made sure Florence evacuees had a warm welcome once they crossed into Florida.

Ron Moore purchased water, snacks, kids toys and pet food to hand out for free to people at the Florida Welcome Center.

He said his goal was to make people smile and show them true Southern hospitality.

“That’s the best part about it... talking to people,” Moore said. “That’s what you want to do... take their mind off of things.”

The rest stop was slammed with cars from North and South Carolina both Wednesday and Thursday.

After spending six hours on the road as he evacuated from North Carolina, Keith Parker said it was nice to know people care.

“It’s really good to see the community is being supportive to us,” Parker said.

Diane Dalen evacuated from South Carolina with her husband and pets. She said it was a nice gesture during a stressful time.

“We don’t know when we’re going to get home; we’re going to need charity from people all the way,” Dalen said.
