An unloaded handgun was found in the backpack of a 9-year-old at Swimming Pen Creek Elementary School on Tuesday.

A teacher found the gun during class, authorities said. The gun was confiscated and the student was taken into custody and questioned by the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The student told the teacher he had the gun, the Clay County School District said. Authorities said there was no threat to students.

The student's parents have been notified. The school district said they will discipline the student based on student conduct rules.
