Hurricane Irma after the storm: Flooding still a concern in St. Johns County

So much water and nowhere for it to go in some St. Johns County neighborhoods.

Rain water has accumulated and has been a problem for neighbors living off of Winton Circle for weeks.

The flood waters rose during Hurricane Irma and got even higher during a recent nor'easter.

"We have people out here who need cancer treatment and can't take their car out to their treatment," said neighbor Sue Bergeron.

Neighbors say this flooding issue is nothing new.

"Nothing gets done and that's gone on for years," said James Peakcock.

“For about five years it’s been progressively getting worse we’ve been begging the road and bridge department to fix the problem,” said Bergeron.

Action News Jax spoke with the St. Johns County director of public works Wednesday to try and get answers for these neighbors who are trapped and was told there are two problems.

The first are insufficient swales, which are the areas that look like a small trenches near the roadway that can collect water, and the second, is that there's nowhere for the standing water to drain.

The county said it is reassessing its current funding and also looking into state and federal grants to fix the problem.

Neighbors say they’ve been also calling for weeks to get help.

“Today I made an appointment with them and they’re supposedly coming out at 10 a.m.,” said Bergeron.

People here hope something happens, before the next storm brings a new wave of water.

Storm debris is also an issue, and a St Johns County spokesperson said debris removal efforts could go into November or even December.
