Jacksonville officer involved in fatal 2016 shooting back on patrol, case still under investigation

Shirley McDaniel said the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is not being open and honest about her son’s case.

JSO confirmed to Action News Jax that Officer Tyler Landreville, who shot and killed McDaniel's son, Vernell Bing Jr., in May 2016 is back on patrol after more than a year on administrative leave.

McDaniel has stressed the need for police body cameras since the shooting.

“I want answers, just like anybody else would, if it were they child,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel said she feels like her quest for information has been denied over and over again, over the last 14 months.

“No statement. No answers, nothing. He’s just back out on the streets, like nothing never happened,” McDaniel said. “It’s just too much, it’s just too much. I was very hurt when I found out about it."

Landreville shot and killed Bing in Historic Springfield. Police say Bing was in a vehicle stolen in an armed carjacking when he led police on a high-speed chase that ended when Bing crashed into an officer’s vehicle.

Landreville fired multiple times at Bing, who was unarmed, striking him once in the head. Since the shooting, McDaniel has pushed for body cameras on officers, but now she has her doubts about that, too.

“I don’t trust the body cameras, if they’re the only ones that’s going to do the investigation,” McDaniel said.

JSO’s transparency website shows the department’s administrative review is still pending.

McDaniel says that’s reason enough for Officer Landreville to not be back on the streets.

“No, he shouldn’t be out on the streets, because who to say he might not get angry again and hurt somebody else child,” said McDaniel.

Action News Jax found out the case is still being investigated by the State Attorney's Office. We reached out to David Chapman with the State Attorney's Office about the status of the case and he sent us this statement:

"The matter remains under investigation. Officer Landreville's employment status has no bearing on our review of the facts."

We asked about the length of the investigation and the State Attorney's Office said there is not a set timeline for officer-involved shooting investigations.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said it's not out of the norm for an officer to return back to duty although an investigation is pending.
