Jacksonville sheriff orders review of officers' handling of Denard Robinson crash

A day after Action News Jax exposed a crash report detailing how Jaguars running back Denard Robinson crashed a car into retention pond and was asleep at the wheel, the sheriff has ordered a review.

Sheriff Mike Williams said Wednesday afternoon,“I have ordered a review of the incident by the officers’ chain of command. Based on that review, any necessary and warranted corrective action will be taken.”

Although the crash report said Robinson was driving a Chevy Impala, Action News Jax found a Chevy Malibu with the same license plate listed on the report still sitting in the tow yard.

The passenger side front window appeared to have some damage.

According to the crash report, the car has about $5,000 worth of damage.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said there some red flags in the crash report itself.

“When they said the driver woke up, looked at him and then went back to sleep, that is the biggest red flag that you can have that the person is unaware of what’s going on around them,” said Jefferson.

Despite the detailed narration from a Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer, who explained how Robinson believed “he was on the road and did not want to exit the vehicle,” and that he had to be told “multiple times his car was in the pond and was sinking," a field sobriety test was not administered.

“Was there a smell of alcohol coming from the person? If not, could he have possibly been on some type of drugs? Number 2, was his speech slurred? That’s not articulated,” said Jefferson.

Jefferson said officers are required to explain why they didn’t conduct a sobriety test.

The crash report showed that there was no suspected use of drugs or alcohol.

Jefferson said the crash itself may not be alarming, but it’s the actions, or lack of actions, by JSO after the crash that seem questionable.

“It gives the perception that there’s some preferential treatment being made. I’m not saying there was preferential treatment, but it gives the signal that it is,” said Jefferson.

Robinson is not facing any charges related to the incident.
