JSO officer's gun, ammo and tactical gear stolen from car

A Jacksonville sheriff’s officer’s gun, ammunition and tactical gear were stolen from his unmarked car, which was parked in his driveway, the JSO said.

The police report said the officer’s neighbor alerted him Wednesday morning that his trunk was open.

When the officer looked inside, he saw that his weapon and gear were gone.

“It’s kind of, you know, bold and scary,” said neighbor Derrick Austin.

Neighbors said they’re worried that police weapons and gear are now in the wrong hands.

“It’s scary because you know someone now that shouldn’t have it has it, and you don’t know what they’re going to use it for,” said neighbor Annie Peace.

The officer reported a loaded semi-automatic rifle, a tactical police vest, a bag of ammunition and other items as stolen.

The police report said the burglar might have pried out the top of the driver's side door to unlock the car and pop the trunk.

“It’s sad that another bad guy has a gun illegally," said Action News Jax Crime and Safety expert Ken Jefferson. "And officers must always make sure that they do their due diligence and secure their cars, especially weapons.”

Action News Jax asked JSO about its protocol on how officers must store their weapons and gear in their cars.

JSO spokeswoman Officer Melissa Bujeda said specific security procedures are not public record.

Action News Jax also asked whether the officer stored his weapons and gear properly or if he faces disciplinary action.

Bujeda said those circumstances still have not been reviewed.

The officer’s neighbors said car break-ins are common in their subdivision.
