LNG is being called more environmentally friendly and financially sustainable for the maritime industry.

"When we set about designing and building our new ships, we wanted to meet and exceed the emission requirements that are in place," said Tucker Gilliam, vice president of special projects for Crowley Maritime.

Crowley is investing more than $550 million in two new ships, a 900-foot pier and multiple cranes to continue to build a strong relationship with their business partners.

In September 2015, Action News Jax first told you these fleets are being built in Mississippi and will be used for service to Puerto Rico.

"It represents our commitment to the Puerto Rico trade and the Puerto Rico market. It's an important piece of our business for Crowley and this investment will allow us to continue to maintain that leadership position," said Gilliam.

JAXPORT CEO Eric Green said this new advancement will pioneer a new path for other companies to follow in the footsteps of Crowley.

"Nobody likes change. But I think what you'll find out and what you'll see. This is the cleanest burning fuel that there is," Green said.

Crowley’s commitment class ships will have specific technology needed to use this efficient fuel source. This facility will serve as the fueling station for Crowley’s LNG-powered ships.
