Local boy, woman recovering after drive-by shootings

A 12-year-old boy shot in the leg and a woman grazed by a bullet are recovering Wednesday morning after two drive-by shootings at two parks two miles apart in Northwest Jacksonville on Tuesday night.

Police were called around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to Charles Clark Park.

A boy was sitting on the bench when a someone in a blue car started firing out the window. The boy ran to a swimming pool and was taken to a hospital, police said.

Shortly after, at nearby Yancey Park, a T-ball game was going on when a 30-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet in another drive-by shooting.

"Unfortunately, everyone that was here seems to have vanished," said JSO Lt. Ellis Burns, who was on the scene. “Thank goodness they should both be fine, but it could have been terrible.”

Officers tell action News Jax as of Wednesday morning they are still investigating and are looking for multiple shooters. JSO says they believe one of the suspected shooters could be in a light blue Buick.

“We’re trying to find out why they were shooting and who they were shooting at, if anyone in particular," Lt. Burns said.

Glen Alexander witnessed the aftermath of the Yancy Park shooting. He was working the concession stand when he heard the chaos.

“He fell to the ground, he fell to the ground … everybody started running, you know?” Alexander said.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said the shootings appear to be gang related, although JSO has not confirmed that. He said that sadly, this may not be the end of it.

“If it’s gang-related, it’s going to continue. One way or another, it’s going to continue,” Jefferson said.

If you have any information about the shootings, call JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crimestoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
