Man tied to Nassau County deputy Eric Oliver's death pleads guilty to being in country illegally

Francisco Obidio Portillo Fuentes, 26, entered the federal court room in a red jumpsuit.

Speaking through an interpreter he entered a plea of guilty to charges of being in the country illegally after being deported.

The US Attorney’s Office said it’s not waiving the right to bring about additional federal charges.

Portillo Fuentes wife was also in court, she was visibly upset. She told Action News Jax that her husband was working on a roofing job in Nassau County when he was pulled over by Border Patrol. She said they’ve been married for seven years and have five children together.

According to the US Attorney’s office he had re-entered the country only a few days before being arrested in Jacksonville.

The maximum penalties he faces include up to two years in federal prison, a potential fine of $250,000 and deportation.

It remains unclear whether Portillo Fuentes will face any charges related to Deputy Eric Oliver’s death. That was not discussed in court Wednesday.

Deputy Oliver was running after Portillo Fuentes on Nov. 22 when he was hit by car and killed on State Road 200.

Portillo Fuentes’ wife said he was running because he was scared.

A date for his sentencing hearing is yet to be set.
