Teen & his mother arrested after 3 shot, 2 beaten in Brunswick

Police arrested April Best, 38, and her 17-year-old son, Zachary, in connection with the shooting. April Best is charged with aggravated battery and Zachary is charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

GLYNN COUNTY, Fla. — A mother and her teenage son are in jail after they got into a street fight that led to a shooting outside their Brunswick home.

Glynn County Police arrested 17-year-old Zachary Best and his mother April Best after police found two men found shot in their yard on Gordon Street and a 19-year-old shot and lying in the street around the corner.

Two more teens were beaten.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said there’s evidence the incident could be gang-related.

Eight-year-old neighbor Janaiya Simmons was woken up by the sound of screams and gunshots.

“When I was sleeping, I heard them. And then my sister and them, they said they ran in the back room so nothing wouldn’t hit us,” said Janaiya.

Janaiya said it’s not the first time she’s heard gunshots in that neighborhood.

Her grandmother Willa Simmons said the possibility of gang violence on her street makes her worried for her three granddaughters.

“I need to leave. I’ve been in here 45 years, but I need to leave,” said Simmons.

April Best was arrested for aggravated battery.

Her son Zachary Best was arrested for aggravated battery and aggravated assault. A Glynn County Police spokesperson said the teen shot at least one of the victims.
