5-year-old drowns in neighbor's pool after wandering from Ortega Hills home

A 5-year-old drowned in a neighbor's pool after wandering from an Ortega Hills home on Wednesday, police said.

Officers are investigating how the child got into the pool at 7600 Ortega Bluff Parkway. Several neighbors tell Action News Jax that the child was a girl with special needs.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said fire rescue was called to the home at 4:58 p.m. after a homeowner found the child in the pool.

Police said a neighbor called the homeowner and said the child had left their house.

The homeowner was working nearby and checked home surveillance cameras on their phone.

The homeowner saw the child in the pool and rushed home.

He called 911 and got the child out of the pool.

Fire rescue tried to revive the child but the child died at the hospital.

Police said the child had wandered from home in the past.

They are investigating who was in charge of watching the child.
