Overnight fire in St. Augustine sends man to hospital

St. Johns County Fire and Rescue was called to a house fire around 1:30 Tuesday morning in the 300 block of North Boulevard, where fire marshals were on scene investigating.

Fire crews attacked the flames through the front door and also focused their efforts on the garage area.

Around 5:15 a.m. fire crews returned to the scene to check for hotspots.

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and is in serious condition. Multiple sources confirm the patient to be Ryan Crosby, who works at the nearby St. Augustine airport.

Kory LeDux spoke with Action News Jax about the fire and how he jumped to action.

"I was asleep. My wife smelled the smoke and I got up. He was in bed, so I went to the room and it was on fire," LeDux said about check on Crosby.

LeDux and his wife were staying with Crosby when the fire broke out.

"I had to literally wake him up drag him out of bed. Hes' alright. He walked out of here. He had smoke inhalation," LeDux said. "You think a cigarette that was not put out started this fire? That’s what we think."

The fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
