Parents of St. Augustine teen killed in hit-and-run push for answers, fight for change

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Wendy and Michael Kuhn brought Christmas decorations to a makeshift memorial off of State Road 312 in honor of their son 16-year-old Dalton Kuhn.

“I dread it because Christmas was his favorite. It's going to be really tough, really tough,” said Michael Kuhn.

More than five weeks ago, someone hit Dalton while he was on his skateboard and didn’t stop to help him.

Bicyclist Akeme Myrie rides on 312 every day to get to work. He said Dalton could’ve been him.

“It's so close, it's not like you have anything barring off the road, so it's really dangerous,” Myrie said.

Dalton’s parents said they were comforted to hear police arrested a man in connection to the January 2015 hit-and-run that killed Benjamin Kausch. The suspect in that case told police he thought he hit a deer, according to the police report.

“It gives us hope that it can happen,” said Wendy Kuhn.

But the Kuhns want to see more done to protect pedestrians and bicyclists.

“A lot of that has to do with sidewalks, a lot of it has to do with bike lanes, you can't have bike lanes so close to busy intersections,” said Wendy Kuhn.

Police are looking for a truck similar to a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. It likely has a missing passenger side mirror and damage to the right front side.

“We’re hoping that people don't think it's storm damage and put it off as storm damage,” Wendy Kuhn said.
