People are urged to prepare for Hurricane Matthew

Delphine Wilson, who is from Las Vegas, made the trip to Jacksonville to visit her brother, who is in the hospital.

She tells us she first heard about Hurricane Matthew on her way here.

“I thought I wanted to make the plane turn back around and take me back to Las Vegas where we don't have that kind of weather. We don’t know how to prepare for it. You have any tips?” said Wilson.

Matthew will be the fourth storm to effect our area this hurricane season.

In every storm, city, county and state leaders want people to stay safe, and we want to remind them what is needed in case the storm hits our viewing area.

The Duval County Emergency Operations Center is tracking Hurricane Matthew and they want to make sure people have water on hand.

“The rule of thumb, none the less, seven days worth. So seven days worth of water and seven days worth of food,” said Tom Francis, public information officer for the EOC.

City leaders said that the food should be non-perishable, and people should also make sure they have batteries, flashlights, and first aid supplies.

People also need to keep in mind all of the necessities if they have pets and small children.

One local father we spoke to said he always has these supplies on hand at his home.

“I know what it’s like to have the lights turned off, and I’m going to tell you, the average American is not ready for 10 days with no electricity,” said  Robert Quaintace.
