Man shot, killed at Westside gas station

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot to death at a Sunoco Gas Station on the Westside Sunday afternoon. Police say his killer is still on the run.

It’s business as normal Sunday night for many customers like Frank Pinckney at the Sunoco Gas Station on the Westside, but hours just before police markers outlined the spot where they say a man was shot in the chest.

“I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting to come here to get some gas and find out somebody got killed right there,” Pinckney said.

Pinckney is from Jacksonville and says crime all over the city is increasing, but Sunday's shooting is right in his area and too close for comfort.

Sgt. Michael Paul with JSO tells Action News, the shooting happened at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

“When they arrived, they did find a black male who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” Paul said.

Police say the victim was at the gas station, putting air in his tires. Witnesses say they heard gunshots.

"They heard the gun fire, and they said it happened very quickly. When they realized what happened, they saw the victim on the ground,” Paul said.

Paul says the victim was rushed to UF Health, but he died on the way.

“There was a number of people in the area. We’re reviewing video to determine if we can identify any of those people,” Paul said.

Pinckney said he hopes witnesses and video will help find the killer.

“It’s messed up because we don’t know if he was a father, that’s somebody's son, you know,” he said.
