Six cars stolen in Atlantic Beach in two weeks

David Dunlap said he has lived in Atlantic Beach for years without worrying about theft.

His home is at the end of a cul-de-sac and leaving his keys inside his truck was a habit.

"I used to just come home, drop the keys in the console and go inside," Dunlap said..

Dunlap says he learned his lesson. Recently he walked outside and couldn't find his truck, so he called the police.

Six days later, it showed up in the parking lot of the high school.

"They called and told me that they found the truck at Fletcher High School parking lot during school hours, that it was sitting there and they waited there to see if the kids would come out and get into the truck, (but)they didn't," Dunlap said.

Atlantic Beach police said Dunlap is one of six people who had their car stolen in the last two weeks, and all of the victims left their cars unlocked with the keys inside.

Dunlap said he feels fortunate that he was able to get his truck back.

"Nothing was stripped out of it. The only thing I lost was a chainsaw in the back and they took everything out of the inside of the truck," Dunlap said.

He also tells us that he needs to get it cleaned. "When I got it back it smelled like pot and had a bunch of tobacco products all through the car," Dunlap said. Police were able to pull fingerprints off of his truck but have not yet named a suspect.
