Son charged with stealing mother's Social Security and pension benefits

Human remains found in backyard of Clay County home.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 56-year-old man is accused of stealing his mother’s Social Security and pension benefits.

Brian Adams of Jacksonville is charged with one count of bank fraud, one count of theft of government property and four counts of aggravated identity theft.

Adams' mother died before July 4, 2014, federal prosecutors said. It is not known how she died because Adams buried her in the back yard of her Green Cove Springs home to conceal the event, cause and circumstances of her death, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Adams then stole her pension funds and Social Security benefits until June 2015, when authorities discovered what he had done with her body.

Adams faces up to 30 years in federal prison for the bank fraud count, up to 10 years for the theft of government property count and 2 years in prison for each of the aggravated identity theft counts. Prosecutors are also seeking more than $35,000, the proceeds from the activity of which Adams is accused.
