JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman faces charges after she allegedly pulled a fire alarm, left a mental health facility and took her children who were placed in their grandmother's custody.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were called Monday night after a patient at the Mental Health Resource Center at 3333 W. 20th Street was suspected of pulling a fire alarm and left the facility.
A person at a home on St. Clair Street said the patient, 24-year-old Sharmeka Jackson showed up, naked and bloody. The person at the home did not contact police, said JSO spokesperson Melissa Bujeda.
Jackson's two children, a 6-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, were at that home. Jackson put on unknown clothing and left with both of the children on foot. Threats to harm herself as well as the children were identified, JSO said.
Jackson was found on Myra Street just after 11 p.m. and the children were found minutes later at the home of a friend of Jackson's on Myra Street, JSO said.
Jackson faces charges of escape from involuntary commitment to mental health facility and false alarm of a fire.
The Department of Children and Families said they are currently investigating. A DCF representative said the children are safe and in police custody.
