7 things to know now: Kim Kardashian West robbed; Hurricane Matthew; Trump's taxes

1. Kardashian robbed: American reality TV star Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint on Monday by five  armed  men in a Paris hotel. According  to authorities, the men stole millions of dollars in jewelry. "Kim Kardashian West was held up at gunpoint inside her Paris hotel room this evening," a representative for West said. "She is badly shaken but physically unharmed." Kanye West left in the middle of a concert when he got the news, saying he had a "family emergency."

2. Matthew moves north: Hurricane Matthew, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in recent years, is headed toward Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm's winds were at 145 mph late Sunday night, making it a Category 4 hurricane. Matthew is already bringing heavy rain to Jamaica and Haiti.

3. Paying for gender reassignment: As of this week, the U.S. government will pay for soldiers to undergo treatment and surgery for gender reassignment. The new policy applies to active duty soldiers who have received approval from a military physician. The annual cost of the treatments and surgeries is estimated to be between $2.4 million to $8.4 million.

4. Trump's taxes: The New York Times is reporting that Donald Trump suffered business losses of more than $900 million dollars in 1995, and could have gone for nearly two decades without paying federal income taxes because of it. The Times, which based the story on records mailed to the newspaper, not Trump's actual federal  return,  quoted tax experts who said that the $916 million Trump reported as a loss in 1995 would have canceled out that much taxable income for 18 years, or roughly more than $50 million in taxable income annually.

5. Shooting  victim dies: The 6-year-old boy shot last week as he played on a South Carolina elementary school playground, died Saturday. Jacob Hall was shot in the leg and suffered major brain trauma from loss of blood. He, another student and a teacher were shot by a 14-year-old who killed his father before going to the school and shooting the three on the playground.

The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) issued an earthquake advisory warning after a swarm of quakes hit the Salton Sea area earlier in the week. More than 140 quakes have been detected in the lake that is northeast of San Diego. The lake lies on top of the San Andreas fault line. Officials issued the warning late last week, telling residents in Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Kern and Imperial counties that there was a greater possibility of a major earthquake through Oct. 4.
