Marco Rubio biography

Born in 1971, Marco Rubio is one of the youngest candidates for president.

He was born in Miami to Cuban immigrants. His parents Mario and Oria Rubio left Cuba, working their way to middle class living in West Miami and eventually moving to Las Vegas. They returned to Miami in the 1980s.

His mother was a maid, cashier and stock clerk, and his father was a bartender, according to Rubio's campaign biography.

According to Biography:

  • 1993 - Graduated by the University of Florida
  • 1996 - Earned law degree from University of Miami.
  • 1998 - Elected to the West Miami City Commission.
  • 1998 - Married his wife Jeanette. The couple has four children.
  • 1999 - Elected to the Florida House of Representatives
  • 2003 - Became majority leader in the Florida House of Representatives
  • 2006 - Elected speaker of the house of the Florida House of Representatives
  • 2010 - Elected to the U.S. Senate. At first he was considered an underdog and at one point had to take back some of his statements that claimed his parents left Cuba during the revolution. They had left before Fidel Castro took power. He won with the help of the tea party, defeating former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
  • 2013 - As a senator, he has worked on a bipartisan plan to introduce the Border Security Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.
  • 2015 - Announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.
