Jaguars fans: Firing head coach Gus Bradley long overdue

Action News Jax spoke with Jacksonville Jaguars fans Sunday night who said the firing of head coach Gus Bradley was long overdue.

A 2-12 record in December is a far cry from the optimism fans had when the Jaguars opened up their season at EverBank Field against the Green Bay Packers in September.

Fans we talked to feel Bradley deserves the lion’s share of the blame for that record. There was some relief in the announcement of Bradley’s firing but the consensus was: What took so long?

“I can’t believe they took this long to pull the trigger,” fan Tom Bowie said.

Bradley has 14 wins in nearly four seasons as the Jags coach. Fans we spoke to say there’s a lot of blame to go around and Bradley deserves much of it.

“You gotta put it on the coaching because of the bad penalties and the bad decisions, wasting timeouts, over and over and over. I mean how long was this gonna go on?” Bowie said.

“The players have their part, but direction has to happen too,” said fan Dale Swain.

Larry Berry has been a dedicated season ticket holder for 15 years. He said the move was necessary because the players lacked discipline and direction.

We asked him if firing Bradley months ago would have saved the team’s season.

“I think it was … it was already a done deal. I think the locker room was already lost. It was too late,” Berry said.

Now fans say if the team has heart, they’ll play as hard as they can with 2 games left.

“Everybody needs to man up and look in the mirror and be like ‘what do you want to do? You want to go down as the worst team in Jaguar history? Or at least you want to go out there and get a couple more wins?’” Berry said.

When we asked fans who they would like to see as the Jaguars next head coach, former Jags head coach Tom Coughlin came up in conversation several times as a possible replacement for next year.
