Jefferson Davis Middle School was on lockdown on Thursday afternoon after a stray bullet struck the school, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
In addition to Jefferson Davis Middle School, Oak Hill Elementary School was also locked down.
JSO said the shooting happened about 750 feet away from Jefferson Davis Middle. JSO said it doesn't believe the school was the intended target. A few students were reportedly injured by glass from the stray bullet and those injuries are minor, JSO said.
Most students had already left Oak Hill Elementary School and just a few walkers were at school at the time of the incident. They were brought back to the office and their parents were notified, according to Duval County Public Schools.
At Jefferson Davis, the regular dismissal time of 4:12 p.m. is delayed and buses are en route to the school. The The car pickup lane was shifted to Melvin Road and Bryson Drive by the train tracks.
