JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Landing, one of the first areas that visitors see as they come over the bridge into downtown Jacksonville, could soon look a lot better.
The Downtown Investment Authority’s plan to redesign the waterfront site is one step closer to becoming a reality. The authority has narrowed its choice down to three firms that will help make it a more recognizable symbol in Jacksonville.
The finalists include Wakefield Beasley & Associates of Ponte Vedra Beach, Cooper Carry Inc. of Atlanta and Eskey Dumes Ripple of New Orleans.

The DIA's board voted last year to spend $100,000 to open up the 6.6-acre site to help better connect the Landing with the city and other buildings.
Rebecca Shumaker said that would bring her and her daughters there more often.
"I'm hoping it will make it more of a community, because right now I don't feel like there is a place for us to go as a community," Shumaker said.
Shumaker also said she would love to see more to do at Jacksonville Landing besides eating at restaurants.
"It would be so much more entertaining if there was stuff for them to do, for them to be entertained instead of me having to fork out a bunch of money to feed them, because that's kind of the only entertainment they have," Shumaker said.
The three contenders will present their plans to the DIA next week.
