Four cars were involved in the crash, which happened just after 7 p.m., FHP said.

Here is the sequence of events that led to the crash, according to FHP:

The 64-year-old man from Alachua was driving a sedan eastbound on State Road 100.

Ahead of him, a pickup truck driven by a 46-year-old man from Palatka was driving eastbound on State Road 100 directly in front of a pickup truck driven by a 24-year-old man from Moultrie, Ga.

The man from Moultrie, Ga., also had a 27-year-old male passenger, who is also from Moultrie, Ga., in his truck, FHP said.

The man from Alachua driving the sedan traveled into the westbound lane of State Road 100 in an attempt to pass the pickup trucks, FHP said.

FHP said the man from Alachua “failed to ... observe the closing distance between” him and another vehicle traveling westbound.

The vehicle traveling westbound was a sedan driven by the 23-year-old man from Orlando and had a passenger, the 26-year-old man also from Orlando.

FHP said the sedans collided head-on, each being hit on their front left sides.

This caused the sedan driven by the man from Alachua to hit the left side of the pickup truck driven by the man from Palatka, and this caused both vehicles “to travel off the paved portion ... down the southern embankment of State Road 100,” FHP said.

The sedan driven by the man from Alachua overturned several times “before coming to final rest on its right side,” FHP said.

The sedan driven by the man from Orlando “rotated clockwise manner before coming to final rest on the north shoulder,” FHP said.

The pickup truck driver from Palatka had minor injuries and the men from Moultrie, Ga., were not injured.
