JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 70-year-old man was arrested within hours of a deadly shooting Monday morning in Jacksonville’s Durkeeville neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Just after midnight Monday, Oct. 19, District 5 Patrol officers responded to a reported shooting at an apartment complex on West 13th Street.
Once on scene, officers found 27-year-old Dakaari Bray with a gunshot wound to the chest. Bray died before he could receive medical attention, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers detained multiple witnesses so Homicide Unit detectives could interview them. Detectives learned that an argument between residents of neighboring apartment units led to a fight, according to the sheriff’s office.
During the fight, Willie Smith, 70, pulled out a gun and shot Bray in the chest, detectives said.
Detectives arrested Smith on charges of manslaughter and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. By 3:30 p.m. Monday, Smith was booked into the Duval County jail, where he remains.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
“We’ll continue to work this investigation to bring justice to Bray’s family and friends,” JSO said.
