911 calls released in deadly crash on SR 16

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — 911 calls are revealing more about the moments following a deadly pedestrian-involved crash in St. Augustine this week.

The crash happened around 12 a.m. Monday. The victim, identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as 26-year-old Anthony Driver, tried to cross State Road 16 at Inman Road when a Dodge Avenger hit him.

FHP said he was struck while walking to work at McDonald’s.

Two callers to 911 saw the man’s body in the roadway as they were driving by.

“He’s laying, like, not moving, in the middle of the road,” one woman said to the operator, while her husband checked on the victim. His voice then comes over the line.

“He’s dead. He’s not breathing. He’s dead.”

FHP investigators tell Action News everyone inside the Avenger was hearing impaired.

At least one of them went to the nearby Dunkin’ Donuts to try to get help.

The employee at the Dunkin' Donuts also called 911.

“This is the Dunkin’ Donuts at State Road 16 and 95,” the employee explains. “I have a hearing impaired gentleman that just walked up through the drive-through. As far as I can make out he's saying that his car was struck.”

“I don’t know if you guys have interpreters or anything,” she said to the operator. “I can interpret it, but it’s very little.”

Law enforcement arrived at the scene within minutes. FHP is the lead investigating agency.

Action News asked FHP if an interpreter was sent to the scene to assist. We are still waiting on the agency’s response.

A spokesperson said Wednesday charges are still pending against the driver of the Avenger. He told Action News the investigation is ongoing.
