About the USS Iwo Jima

The USS Iwo Jima was commissioned in Pensacola on June 30, 2001.

The highest number of of Medals of Honor in U.S. history were awarded for the battle of Iwo Jima, fought until March 26, 1945.  U.S. forces captured the island.

The ship’s motto is “uncommon valor.”

USS Iwo Jima is 844 feet long, and it’s bean is 106 feet. It has two boilers, two geared steam turbines, two shafts, and 70,000 total brake horsepower.

The ship is the third to homeport in Mayport.

Three-hundred-seventy single sailors will be moving into on-base barracks.  Over 1,000 family members will be moving with them to the Jacksonville area.
