Amazon pressed on safety concerns with third-party drivers

One of the staples of ordering from retailers like Amazon is free shipping -- but Action News Jax is investigating if there is a price paid by Jacksonville-area drivers working under strict delivery deadlines.

Amazon delivered more than 5 billion Amazon Prime packages worldwide in 2017 and says it has more than 100 million people that pay Prime membership members who spend $119 per year for free 2-day delivery.

Amazon's Jacksonville delivery station is a 60,000 square-foot facility that moves thousands of packages every day.

"There is no pressure to get the packages off," says Amazon delivery manager Spencer Halliday. "We route these packages to give drivers time for a break, time to take lunch and still get packages delivered in timeframe we need them to."

But a Business Insider investigation found drivers delivering Amazon packages alleged abuses. Among the charges? A physically demanding work environment that pressures drivers to drive at high speeds and blow stop signs.

One local third-party contractor says he hasn't seen any abuses in Jacksonville.

"Do they run into any problems out there? We all do," says Brandon Law, the CEO of On The Go Express.

His company is a third-party contractor hired by Amazon to make at least 100-150 deliveries per day -- per truck -- in the Jacksonville area. There's more deliveries during the holiday season.

He says his drivers are safe.

"Challenges present themselves, but we are trained to assist them in those issues," Law said. For Halliday, he says he has not experienced any issues with third-party drivers.

“One of those instances have not been brought to my attention in Jacksonville," says Law. "But if it is, we will investigate it and see what we can do about it.”

Amazon also employs drivers through its flex program where they can be their own boss and create their own schedules.
