Autopsy may not reveal cause of death of Lonzie Barton, experts say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's possible the cause of death for Lonzie Barton may never be known.

While police said they believe the remains are Lonzie's, it may take weeks for the medical examiner to prove it.

Two days after police were led to remains in the Bayard area, experts say an autopsy may not reveal the toddler's cause of death.

Action News Jax was told that the remains were badly decomposed, making it hard for forensics to determine a cause of death.

It appears investigators may have to rely on evidence previously collected and on testimony from Ruben Ebron or Lonzie's mother, said Action News Jax Law and Safety expert Dale Carson.

Carson said key evidence for investigators was also likely lost because it has taken so long to find Lonzie.

Lonzie’s funeral is in the works. There is speculation his mother, Lonna Lauramore Barton, will be requesting a hearing to be released from jail so she can attend the services.
