BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — Heavy rain is leaving its mark on Baker County, flooding yards, creating travel challenges, and forcing the cancellation of community events.
In parts of the county hit hardest by recent storms, residents say standing water has become a recurring problem.
For Lisa Fairclough, flooding in her St. Marys neighborhood is more than an inconvenience.
“It’s going to be a few weeks before this even dries up, because we got rain after rain after rain,” Fairclough said.
Fairclough said flooding affects her neighborhood almost every time it rains. She said her daughter had trouble getting home from work last night because some roads were in poor condition due to the weather.
When the floodwaters recede, Fairclough said they often leave potholes behind. She said she has reached out to government officials and her homeowners association for help, but the situation has not improved.
“We pay the association; where is that money going? But it would cost money to repave this whole road,” Fairclough said.
Residents are now pumping water from their properties and preparing for additional rainfall in the forecast.
“We’ve got grandbabies, and I’m scared to even let them go out there, because if the grass is high then you have to worry about snakes and things like that,” Fairclough said.
The weather is also affecting plans across the county.
Shoals Park is closed until further notice, and the Baker County Sheriff’s Office has canceled National Night Out, which had been scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Macclenny Duck Pond.
With more rain expected, some residents say they are concerned flooding conditions could continue in the days ahead.
