CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — A football player from Camden County died in a crash over the weekend.
According to the St. Marys Police Department, Braxton Sullivan was fatally struck by a 2003 Mercury Marquis while walking with his younger brother on St. Marys Road east of Interstate 95 near Exit 1 on Saturday.
Sullivan graduated from Camden County Middle School.
According to the Camden County School District, grief counselors were at CMS for staff and those who needed it Sunday.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Sullivan was identified as 21-year-old Rubin O'Neil Mainor of Jacksonville, according to a release from the St. Marys Police Department. Mainor told police that he reached down to pick up his phone to reset it to play music when he heard a noise.
He thought he hit something, stopped, saw that he had struck Sullivan and called 911.
According to the release, Sullivan was walking in the right-hand lane next to the fog line while his brother was walking in the grass on the shoulder of the road.
Sullivan was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Camden County Coroner Wayne Peeples. His body was transported Monday to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office in Savannah.
No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
