Canadian Geese creating a flock of issues in Southside Jacksonville community

Residents of Ironwood Village in Jacksonville are facing various challenges from feathered foes. Some neighbors have voiced their concerns about geese that are damaging their lawns and creating a mess in the area.

As a result, several complaints have been made to the homeowners association and the neighborhood’s Facebook group.

“It’s a group of like-minded complainers, so they’re always gonna have something to talk about,” Ironwood Village resident Andy Ghelerter joked.

However, for neighbors like Andy Ghelerter, it’s been nothing more than a minor traffic issue here or there.

“The geese can fly, but they choose very slowly to walk across the street. So sometimes they hold up traffic,” Ghelerter added playfully.

And in an email Action News Jax now has that was sent to a concerned homeowner, the HOA explained there’s not much it can do, as Canadian geese are a protected species Additionally, a majority of the neighborhood voted against destroying their nests and eggs.

However, in a letter to the community, the HOA did urge people to not feed them, citing the “environmental hazard to the area,” which some neighbors agree with.

“You definitely don’t wanna feed ‘em. You don’t ever wanna feed any kind of wildlife, that’ll attract them,” said Ghelerter.
