On Oct. 2, 1672, the first shovel of dirt was turned over where the Castillo de San Marcos now stands.
This week on Oct. 2, there will be a celebration to commemorate its founding.
“We’re having a variety of demonstrations going on--everything from food to priests to talking about how important religion was at that time,” said Steve Roberts, chief of interpretation and education.
He said the Castillo de San Marcos has a great history
Roberts said it will be a day filled with fun events for families.
“Before the Castillo there were nine wooden forts and they didn’t last,” Roberts said.
He said Spain built it here when they realized they needed something stronger.
Roberts said that at 3 p.m. Sunday they’ll also reenact the groundbreaking right outside the fort walls.
