JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 4-year-old boy was found wandering around a busy roadway alone and scared.

He was nearly hit by several vehicles in the street before he was rescued.

Montreal Laurie was on her way to work when she saw drivers suddenly slamming on their cars' breaks.

"I seen these cars swerving and I seen the little boy running into the street. They were swerving, missing him and a truck was coming kinda fast. I went ahead and detoured across," said Laurie.

Laurie said she stopped her car in the middle of Beach Boulevard to pull the boy to safety.

She said he was alone and frightened but not hurt.

"Crying, distraught, scared, just scared and crying. Didn't want to talk too much," said Laurie.

She snapped a photo of him while he waited in her car by the Jax Food Truck Food Court for police and his mother to arrive.

Action News went to the mother's house to talk to her but no one answered the door.

According to police, the boy wanted to go to school like his brother and managed to unlock the door while his mother was sleeping. He reportedly wandered through his apartment complex, onto the street and down a few blocks to Beach Boulevard.

"The child should not have been out that long without someone noticing the child was by himself," said Laurie. The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating.
