For the second time this week, families are asking for relief from major flooding in Jacksonville.

Action News Jax contacted city and state officials to see if anything is being done to improve the drainage system in some of the flood prone areas of Jacksonville.

The city responded to several problem areas:

Springfield: The Lower Eastside Drainage Improvement project in Springfield has commenced with a Notice to Proceed (NTP) issued last Thursday (7/27).  The project duration, as contracted, is scheduled to last approximately 910 days.  Flyers are expected to be issued to citizens throughout the community soon, explaining the anticipated timeline and sequence of events throughout the project area.

San Marco: The San Marco pump stations functioned properly during yesterday's rain event. There are currently 2 pump stations located in this area. To further assist with potential flooding in this area, a third Stormwater Pump Station (LaSalle Street Outfall) has been recommended by Mayor Curry in the FY 17/18 Budget (CIP) to receive funding to support its design. Additional funding will be recommended in future years to support the entire project construction.

Confederate Park: Public Works continues to evaluate opportunities to improve the drainage situation in this area as the Hogan's Creek and other property remediation efforts move forward.

West 20th: The drainage failure was on 20th Street expressway, which falls under the purview of FDOT. The blockage was located on 20th Street expressway directly south of Grunthal. I was advised that FDOT started pumping their drainage system, and working to clear the blockage Thursday morning.
