DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — The Clara White Mission is accepting donations to help veterans in the area. Many veterans in the area need help.

The Clara White Foundation teamed up with the Five Star Veterans Center and Feeding Northeast Florida for a food drive.

“We felt that a collaborative food drive would help us really say 'thank you' to our military and veteran families who have located here, since they are truly our American heroes,” Five Star Veterans Center Administrative Director Suzie Loving said.

The goal is to create a holiday basket for veterans facing hunger.

The food drive begins during the Veterans Parade, where several food barrels will be set up. The food drive runs until Dec. 11.

"It's not a handout, it’s a hand up," said Ju’Coby Pittman, Clara White Mission president and CEO.  "Bring people holiday cheer that would be fantastic."

Items accepted for the baskets include non-perishable food items such as canned and boxed food items, large sizes of vegetables, fruit, rice, canned meats, holiday foods and grocery gift cards.

The donated food will be sorted and assembled in gift baskets at FNEFL’s Food Distribution Center on Edgewood Avenue. To volunteer at the distribution center, contact 904-830-4379.
