JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new rendering shows the tiny house community that could soon take up an entire block between Jefferson and Broads streets in LaVilla.
Michelle Paul, who is a board member for the Clara White Mission, said it’s part of a plan to help veterans in need of housing.
“We’d love for the veterans to have a part in building their own home and then for them to be able to have a part in building some of the future homes, as well,” she said.

“Since the story broke we’ve had quite a few businesses that have already offered to sponsor a home,” Paul said
Now, they’re hoping the city will sell them a portion of the block it doesn’t own.
“Having the whole block is important to making this whole project that we have in mind really kind of come together,” Paul said.
Historic buildings rest on the portion the Clara White Mission doesn’t own including Genovar Hall, which used to be a jazz club in its heyday and three shotgun style houses that survived the Great Fire of 1901.

The Clara White Mission is hoping to repurpose the buildings.
Next month, the organization will present its plan for a total of 18 tiny houses before the City Council.
Paul said while it’s too early to talk timelines, she’s feeling confident veterans will soon have a tiny house of their own.
“We’re trying to do it with as little waste as possible and also something that the city of Jacksonville can be excited about,” Paul said.
