CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested after a weekend disturbance at his home that authorities say turned physical, the agency announced Monday.
Deputy Claude Hurley III was arrested on two counts of simple battery (domestic) and has been placed on administrative leave, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Deputies responded around 9:15 p.m. Sunday to a complaint about a disturbance in progress at a home where Hurley lives with several family members. Hurley was not home when deputies arrived but was said to have been drinking alcohol and causing a disturbance that became physical, the sheriff’s office said.
After examining the scene, interviewing witnesses and reviewing recorded video, deputies determined Hurley grabbed food a family member was eating, threw it across the room and shoved that person. He continued yelling and shoved the family member multiple times as they tried to leave, the sheriff’s office said.
When another family member arrived and tried to intervene, Hurley pushed that person away as well, according to the release.
No injuries were reported, but investigators determined “there was clear evidence that Hurley had met the statutory threshold of committing simple battery on two family members,” the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives met Hurley at another location for an interview, after which he was arrested.
“Acts of domestic violence are unacceptable and will not be tolerated - especially when committed by an individual entrusted to wear our badge,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.
The agency encouraged anyone experiencing domestic violence to call 911 or its non-emergency line at 904-264-6512, or to submit a tip through its SaferWatch app. Quigley House can be reached at 904-284-0061.
