OAKLEAF PLANTATION, Fla. — 10:30 PM UPDATE: A deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed an armed individual after a confrontation that occurred during an investigation by the Department of Children and Family Services.
At a press briefing, Sheriff Michelle Cook said that deputies were dispatched to Pebble Stone Court in Oakleaf Plantation to assist DCF.
Sheriff Cook said that while conducting a routine check of names, deputies discovered that one individual had an out-of-state warrant.
While deputies tried to confirm the warrant, the suspect armed themselves with two knives and became confrontational, said the Sheriff.
Sheriff Cook said the suspect and deputies then moved to the backyard, where the confrontation escalated and the suspect knocked down a fence and continued into a neighbor’s yard.
“A short time later, we had a single deputy shoot the subject that was at the time armed, and the subject was deceased at that time,” the sheriff said.
No deputies were reported to be injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office are conducting an independent investigation.
FDLE and the State Attorney’s Office are expected to release more information as it becomes available.
