CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The Clay County Board of County Commissioners is preparing to vote on exemptions for the county’s controversial new Stormwater Assessment fees.
We told you last month when Clay County residents spoke out against the stormwater fees for hours during the last county commissioners’ meeting.
Despite their opposition, commissioners voted 3 to 2 and passed the Stormwater Assessment fees.
Tonight, county commissioners are deciding whether to include some exemptions for the fees.
The two exemptions listed in the agenda are for hardship and disabled veterans.
Here is the breakdown of what specifically is being voted on tonight:
A 100% exemption for hardship that would require you to meet poverty level income…and a 50% exemption for disabled veterans.
The stormwater assessment fee is for property owners in Middleburg and other, more rural parts of Clay County.
This does not include properties in Orange Park, Green Cove Springs, Keystone heights, and Penny Farms.
Many residents were frustrated about these stormwater assessment fees because they felt like they were brought on by overdevelopment.
Although the commissioners approved these new assessments in August, people are still speaking out against them today.
The Stormwater Assessment fees go into effect on October 1st.
