State Attorney recuses self from investigation of Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels

Melissa Nelson removes herself from case, asks Governor to name another prosecutor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — State Attorney Melissa Nelson asked the Governor to reassign the criminal investigation of Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels due to a conflict.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been investigating the case for over a year and it was just completed according to the letter. The findings were given to the State Attorney’s Office and while reviewing the reports, it became clear that some of the assistant state attorneys employed by the office would be witnesses if the case were to go to trial.

We first reported in May when Sheriff Darryl Daniels accused a woman of stalking him. That woman was Cierra Smith, a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office corrections officer. She was not charged.
