Coach Doug Marrone responds to Telvin Smith not playing this season

The coach said the team is here to support Smith

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Doug Marrone, made a statement on Friday about Telvin Smith Sr. deciding to not play during the 2019 NFL season. He said he was not made aware of Smith’s decision before he tweeted the information out.

However, the coach also said that he football is currently an afterthought, as he and the team are “here to support him in any which way.” When asked if the door would be open for Smith to later rejoin the team, Marrone said he hopes to have some communication [with Smith] before that point. If they do, he said that scenario would be great.

"You have to be prepared in this profession for anything. I think being a head coach for this long, things come up that you don’t expect and you kind of learn early on your first year probably when you’re a head coach that you have to expect everything," Marrone said. "I just look at it as more like I said before – my immediate reaction is that the football side of it is out. 'What can we do to make sure that we are here to support and help the player?'”
