JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The City of Jacksonville is forced to repair sewer lines that are clogged by grease that is poured down drains.
Repairs are taking place in Mandarin neighborhoods.

Cooking grease that is poured down the drain mixes with other chemicals in the sewer and causes a buildup.
JEA said it averages 162 tons of grease per year that have to be hauled.
JEA said running hot water and turning on the garbage disposal while pouring grease down the drain does not work.

Properly dispose of fats, oils and grease by pouring it into a used can, sealing the can in a plastic bag and placing it in the trash. Frying oil can be recycled into biofuel at recycling stations.
The repairs are expected to finish around Dec. 4 as long as weather does not interfere.
